Matt Covington, Brett Berry Win a Rain Shortened Night at Dodge City Raceway Park

Dodge City, Kan 7/6/2024 (www.racedcrp.com) - Mother Nature inevitably played its role again this season, as the Freedom 50 at Dodge City Raceway Park fell short of a full program.

With the chances of severe weather all day, teams where on the fence from the get go this morning. With a total of fifty-six race teams checked in, the night started.

Heat race action started shortly after hot laps and with weather quickly approaching the track, the winds started to pick up. With the Crazy Cruiser division getting ready to take the green flag, the decision was made to go into a rain delay.

For nearly 20 minutes, light rain and gusty winds took over, but after about 40 minutes from going into the delay, cars were back on track to finish their heat races.

The ASCS Western Plains Region was up first for their 20 lap feature. With Matt Covington and Jeremy Campbell on the front row, the field was ready for its 20-Lap feature. Covington wasted no time taking the lead. The race went from flag to flag, and so did Matt Covington.

Brett Berry picked up the 50-lap feature win in the IMCA Modifieds. After starting on the pole, and leading the first twenty-five laps, Berry decided to take the $400 challenge and restart from the back. Jack Nightingale, who changed a right rear tire during the mid-race break, took the lead after the restart. Brett Berry threw out a line and quickly started reeling in Nightingale. On lap 32, Berry regained the lead and never looked back.

With more weather closing back in on the track, the decision was made to postpone the rest of the night with the safety of drivers and fans in mind. Fans are able to redeem their tickets for the Jerry Soderberg Memorial on July 27th.
